Mercury Glass Family Fun

{my niece, Chelsey }

Last week I got to go to

stay with my mom and dad in California ~

My sister, mom and I got in a crafty

mood and decided to try a

mercury glass tutorial from Pinterest ~

We started with cheapy glass pieces

to experiment with ~

First you we sprayed on

Krylon Looking Glass spray that we

found at Michaels ~ The tutorial

said to put it on the inside of

the glass bottle ~ I tried the candlesticks

and painted the outside and it worked great!

{my niece, me and my mom }

The other pieces we sprayed the inside

and the outside ~

Then you spray your piece with half

water and half vinegar and let it sit

for a minute ~

Then you just pop the little bubbles

with a paper towel ~

It was so fun and super easy!

Next time I want to try spraying

something darkish first so that

it has a darker look

under the popped bubbles ~

Yours is the best I have seen! I have this spray and haven't had much luck yet. I think I need to spray the outside--I always spray the inside. TFS

With the looking glass spray - Do I wait till the spray is completely dry to spritz with water/vinegar or do I spritz right away while it's wet or tacky? Thanks! I'm thinking wet/tacky, right?

Cheryl said...

love this project!!... the krylon spray is at lowes, home depot and walmart too... do you let it dry for how long before spraying on water/ vinegar mix???

sarahbaade said...

Lori,
How did you get the spray paint to reach the bottom of the inside of the vase? I'm thinking of using this for wedding reception vases. Any suggestions would be great.

Goeb Life said...

Does anyone know where I can get the looking glass paint? I have tried home depot, joanns, and wal mart.

what a great idea! Do you think it would still have the same effect if you were to only paint the outside? I'm thinking about doing it for some spice jars.

Lwelton said...

Do you know if it will only work on clear glass? I have a ceramic base lamp I'd love to turn into mercury glass. It is a grey ish white with a country pattern that I'd lice to cover

So awesome! Thank you for sharing--can't wait to try this!

I see some others have asked this question, but don't see an answer...how long after spraying the glass with the "looking glass" do you wait before spraying with the water/vinegar? thanks!

grandparentsplus.com said...

Do you do the second step with the vinegar and water on both the inside and outside? PVR

I have had a hard time finding Looking Glass spray paint. I finally found one can at Michaels for $18.99, that seemed really expensive to me.???

Anonymous said...

I found the looking glass spray paint at Hobby Lobby - they didn't have it at Michael's, Joann's or Walmart.

Maneki said...

What a beautiful effect -- must try this (but probably on something more jewellery-sized)! That's for the instructions!

I found the glass looking spray at super walmart for $8! If you buy it from Michaels use their 40% coupons they put in Sundays news paper!

Emily said...

Do you think that if I sprayed this on the outside of glass bottles then they would still be food safe to store my homemade khalua?

Jenn "Rook No. 17" said...

I was wondering the same as one of the commenters above: Did you wait for the Looking Glass to dry before spraying with the water/vinegar solution, or is it done when the paint is still wet?

Anonymous said...

Wonder what effect this would have if you did it on wood...think I'll experiment.

This is such a neat idea!!! Thank you very much for posting

Just found your blog when I was researching techniques for mercury glass. Your comment about using a dark color after using the looking glass technique was a great idea. I used it and it even looks better with the darker color - I had a Rustoleum hammered metal paint in brown. Just let the paint blurp a little and gave it a hit and miss spray. Did this on the back of a footed cake plate that is imitation depression glass and got just the effect I was looking for. Thanks for your great instructions. Can hardly wait to explore the rest of your blog!

I love mercury glass, but can't afford the real thing. Thanks for the quick and easy tutorial on this faux mercury glass, it looks fabulous!

You have so many comments for this tutorial. You make it sound and look so easy, not surprised.
I have a glass lamp I'd like to try it on. I saw it done on a glass lamp on a blog somewhere but was hesitant to try it on my lamp. Will try it first on a glass vase seeing how easy you make it look. I'm going to go for it when I get the paint.
We live out aways from a store that might have the paint also so will check it out. Happy Weekend.

do you think this would work on plastic, such as a honeybee container?

I found the looking glass paint at Ace Hardware. As to the vinegar water mixture... Spritz it on while the paint is still wet for the best effect!

Love hearing about this idea. Picked up about 50 pieces of glass at Goodwill and are painting them for our daughters reception. I did a twice over on some of them. Let them dry to slightly tacky before the vinegar. Just sprayed the outside because I didn't want to burn a candle inside if painted. LOVE them! I got my paint at Hobby Lobby for 11.99 missed the 50% off sale. Couldn't find it at Michaels or Lowes.

Luckily I can buy mercury glass in all the stores and today just went out JUST for mercury glass and there was alot of it out there. Can't wait to try it though...the possibilities!? Great pictures too. May I ask where you get your german glass glitter? Im looking for a good one. blessings, lady

What effect does the vinegar/water mix cause? How does the glass look if you don't spray vinegar on it?

Anonymous said...

Hi! Love the idea. How long do you let it sit in between the spray paint step and the vinegar/water step as well as between the vinegar/water step and wiping it with a paper towel?

I love this project, but I also love that you did it with your family! 100% adorable post :)

Looks great! Thanks for sharing. I think I will spray the inside a darker color and the outside the lighter color. Do you think this would work on a mirror?

This is the best 'fake' mercury glass that I've seen. You girls did a great job!

I noticed that several asked about the time frame between using the spray and then the vinegar/water mixture. That would help me too!

Just found your blog and so happy I did. I'm a new follower and can't wait to see other creative endeavors!
